THE Mini Disc Golf FEDERATION "Special" Rules of Play 2008
Introductory Statement
The MDGF borrows heavily from the PDGA rules for big Disc Golf. Please go to the links portion of this site and click on the PDGA link to learn the PDGA rules. The MDGF site lists exceptions to the PDGA rules for Mini Disc Golf play.
Federation-approved mini discs
Little Flyer and Little Flyer spiral
Inova heavy weight DX and CE plastic
Discraft mini magnet (hard or soft) and Z plastic
Ching mini JU JU or MoJo
All Minis under 4-1/2 inches in diameter are approved for play. Wood and metal minis are not allowed.
Course Design/Hole Distances
No Mini Disc Golf hole will be longer than 400 feet long.
Throwing stance rules
The player's lead foot must remain in contact with the tee spot during tee off. No run-up or step-up is permitted.
A player may follow through or "jump tee" off the tee spot after releasing the mini disc.
Run-ups or step-ups are not permitted for any throw by a player.
Jump putts and falling putts are permitted outside ten (10) meters.
Special putting rule
If the mini comes to rest on top of the mini basket the putt is considered good.
Penalty stroke rules
1. "House!"/"No house!" rule
Any mini landing on the roof of a designated building is OB! A one stroke penalty is added to the score, and the player throws from a Drop Zone, as determined by the course owner/designer.
2. Residential property factor
Due to the many, many, unique residential property circumstances and landscapes the course owner has the option to be creative with their course design and O.B. rules. For example if the course is located in a neighborhood with low traffic and the mini disc stops at rest on the street, the designer can rule the mini O.B., assess the player a 1 stroke penalty and have the player throw from the lie. If the mini disc stops at rest on a busy street or road the designer could assess a 1 stoke penalty and have the player throw directly in bounds from where the mini disc came to rest. If the course owner is a Federation member any special course rules must be listed in The Mini Disc Golf Federation Course Directory.
3. The 2 meter rule is not in affect for mini golf.
If a mini disc comes to rest suspended above a structure and does not fall and hit the structure by the time it is the players turn, the disc is spotted perpendicular to the lie, no closer to the pin. No penalty stroke is assessed.
If a mini disc comes to rest suspended beyond an O.B. line, the player is assessed a 1 stoke penalty and must spot the mini disc directly below the lie and continue play.
If the mini disc come to rest suspended over O.B. water, the player is assessed a 1 stroke penalty, the mini disc is spotted directly in bounds from the lie, and play continues.
4. Glow rules
No lost disc penalty stroke is assessed if the mini disc was glowing and a spotter was utilized. The player marks the lie closest to where it was last seen with the approval of the members in the group, and continues play.
